The Institute for Middle East Studies (IMES) at the George Washington University is offering ten travel grants for K-14 teachers to attend our summer teacher workshop in Des Moines, Iowa.  The two-day workshop will be held on Monday, August 13, 2018 (9AM to 5PM) and Tuesday, August 14, 2018 (9AM – 4PM).

About the Workshop:
K-14 teachers are invited to join us for a two-day workshop designed to help you integrate Middle East studies in your classroom. Sessions include:

  1. Studying the Middle East: Unpacking what we know, what we think we know, and what
    we don’t know about the region
  2. Curriculum: Analyzing representations of the region
  3. Islam and the Five Pillars: Complicating the single textbook story
  4. Curriculum: Teaching Sunnism and Shi’ism
  5. Books for teaching the Middle East in K-12 classrooms
  6. Current affairs: Locating reliable sources and teaching tools to talk about the news
